History repeated itself tonight as the Chiefs defeated the Express in Overtime, in shockingly similar fashion to the previous time the two teams clashed.
It started with a strong first period for the Express, but despite outshooting the Chiefs 15-9 they trailed 0-1 heading into the first intermission.
In the second period the Chiefs came out blazing, peppering netminder Charles-Antoine Girard until finally Grant Reid snuck one through the wickets to widen the Chiefs lead 2-0.
The momentum shifted drastically when Justin Ivanusec took a high stick from Luka Romaniak, drawing a 4-minute power play for the Express. Just 3 seconds in, Michael Munroe fired a one-timer from the right side to bring the Express within one. The power play success continued as just one minute later, Justin Ivanusec scored his first goal of the year to tie things at 2.
The third period started hot, with an early Chiefs power play goal giving them a one goal lead again. After some back and forth hockey, Lucas Knorr notched his first of the season on a blocker side wrist shot to tie it at 3. Some close calls, but neither team scored again and just like the prior matchup between these two, we were destined for Overtime.
In OT, Nishaan Parmar set up chance after chance, including hitting a post, but his valiant effort was in vain, as a rush chance for the Chiefs took an awkward bounce off Express forward Avery Johnson, and landed in the goal for another Chiefs overtime victory.
The Express will have some work to do over this week as they prepare for another home back-to-back against Powell River and Nanaimo.
Next game is October 2nd in the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre, broadcasters Zach Clarke and Markus Gill will have the call on FloHockey!
