Game Day! Coquitlam Express vs Powell River Kings (4/3/21)

It’s Game day!

The Express are set to play their second game of the season against the Powell River Kings – this is the first of 10 games against the Kings in this shortened pod season.

Following a disappointing season opener against the Surrey Eagles, the Express are looking to bounce back in this matinee tilt against a Kings squad who they played only twice in the 2019-20 season. The two teams each took home a win in those two games. It is very likely that these teams are unfamiliar with their opponent’s systems and tendencies.

With that being said, the Express should have the advantage, seeing as the Kings played no extended training camp games! Remember, the Express played 11 and now already have a regular-season game under their belt. On the flip side of that coin, the Kings will be looking to take advantage of an Express team who is playing in a back-to-back situation.

Perhaps weaknesses to exploit, the Kings were the owners of the league’s second-worst power play (15.2%) and also penalty kill (76.1%). As we’ve talked about previously, special teams are going to be a major factor in this condensed season and the Express should look to capitalize on their opportunities while limiting the Kings’. Penalties hurt the Express in their season opener – they took five penalties and it cost them two goals.

Puck drop is set for 1:00 pm at Scotia Barn in Burnaby. You can catch all of the action live on HockeyTV!

Get off the tracks – a train is coming through!
