Job Title: Head Coach
Organization: Coquitlam Express
Location: Coquitlam, BC
Reports to: President of Hockey Operations and General Manager
Position Overview
The Coquitlam Express are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head Coach to lead our hockey program. The Head Coach will be responsible for all aspects of team performance, player development, and culture, working closely with hockey operations staff to ensure alignment with the organization’s vision and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Culture
- Establish and maintain a high-performance, team-first culture
- Lead by example with professionalism, accountability, and strong communication
- Foster a positive, disciplined, and competitive environment
Player Development
- Design and implement individual and team development plans
- Work closely with players to support skill progression, hockey IQ, and character growth
- Collaborate with support staff (trainers, strength coaches, etc.) to optimize performance
On-Ice Performance
- Plan and run practices with a focus on structure, pace, and execution
- Develop and implement team systems and game strategies
- Manage bench operations and in-game decision-making
Staff Collaboration
- Work alongside the General Manager and hockey operations staff on roster decisions
- Recruit, mentor, and oversee assistant coaches and team staff
- Participate in scouting, recruiting, and player evaluations
Administration & Communication
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with players, staff, and management
- Support organizational initiatives, events, and community engagement
- Ensure compliance with league rules, policies, and standards
Qualifications
- Previous coaching experience at a high level (Junior, U18, College, or equivalent)
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Proven ability to develop players and build team culture
- Deep understanding of modern hockey systems and player development models
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Certifications required by league/governing body (or willingness to obtain)
Preferred Attributes
- Experience in junior hockey or similar high-performance environments
- Background in recruiting and player evaluation
- Ability to manage and lead a staff effectively
- Commitment to continuous learning and development
