KULHANEK COMMITS TO SFU

From bchl.ca:

Burnaby Express forward Colby Kulhanek will play his university hockey close to home after committing to attend Simon Fraser University and play in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League beginning in the fall of 2010.

The Port Coquitlam product returned to the BCHL in November after Burnaby acquired the 20-year old forward from the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Sherwood Park Crusaders. Kulhanek scored seven goals and totalled 28 points in 38 games with the Express. He was also played a key leadership role after being named an Assistant Captain in January.

“I?m thrilled for Colby that he?ll have the opportunity to play his university hockey at SFU,” Burnaby Express general manager Darcy Rota says. “Colby brought tremendous leadership and character to our club after we acquired him last season, and I wish him all the best as he takes the next step in his hockey career and with his studies.”

Kulhanek's junior career also began in the league, as he suited up in 47 games for the Langley Hornets in 2005/06 as a 16-year old. From there he split three seasons in the WHL between the Chilliwack Bruins, Red Deer Rebels and Prince George Cougars, netting 17 goals and 46 points in 161 major junior games.

“We?re very pleased that Colby has committed to compete at Simon Fraser University beginning this fall,” says SFU head coach Mark Coletta. “He is a talented winger who should provide an immediate offensive boost to a strong returning group. He?s also a solid physical presence who has succeeded at a very high level of junior hockey.”

Kulhanek joins a number of fellow BCHL grads at SFU, including goaltender Justin Mulholland (Surrey Eagles) and forwards Patrik Martin (Trail Smoke Eaters) and Jake Bouma (Cowichan Valley Capitals). For more on the SFU Men's Hockey program, visit www.sfuhockey.com.
