Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Chilliwack Chiefs (10/15/21)

The Coquitlam Express hosted the Chilliwack Chiefs in their home opener Friday night. Hundreds flocked to see the Express in action and the Train Station had an electricity in the air – something it has not seen in 593 days, dating back to March 1, 2020. The Express had a whopping 1096 fans in the building – the largest home opener they’ve had in 10 years!

The first period was a tight-checking and physical affair, filled with hard forechecks and massive hits, none bigger than a monstrous Matthew Campbell open-ice hit just seconds into the game. Fans enjoyed back-and-forth action, but despite the Express outshooting the Chiefs 13-10, they found themselves trailing by a goal after 20 minutes of play.

The middle frame was much of the same in terms of physicality and even play. However, the Express managed to get on the board courtesy of a Ray Hamlin snipe and swing the momentum in their favour for a large portion of the second period. The Chiefs’ potent powerplay capitalized almost immediately on their first opportunity of the hockey game to give themselves a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. The Chiefs had the edge in shots 7-6 in the period.

The Express showed life in the third period, tying the game up at two, courtesy of Harry Meirowitz’s first BCHL goal. However, it was all Chiefs after that as they’d go on to score three unanswered to close out the game 5-2. The Express ran into penalty troubles and against this potent Chiefs team, that’s usually a recipe for disaster.

The Express will look to get back in the win column tomorrow night when they visit the Surrey Eagles!
