Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Powell River Kings (4/21/21)

The Coquitlam Express visited the Powell River Kings Wednesday evening in what was these two teams’ sixth meeting of this shortened pod season. The Kings ended up doubling up on the Express with a 6-3 final score.

The Express came into this one shorthanded, missing key players like Ryan Tattle (injury), Danny Pearson (suspension), and Ryan Williams (suspension), and some players were forced to jump into more prominent roles against a very offensively gifted Kings squad. Additionally, the Express did themselves no favours once again by teeing up the Kings with a staggering eight power plays – granted, the Kings only found twine once on the man advantage, but it did wonders in terms of swaying momentum in the Kings’ favour.

Realistically, considering the circumstances, the Express played a fairly solid game and showed shades of life throughout this contest. The Kings, to their credit, did a fantastic job at creating traffic in front of Express goalie Jaden Little and making his job very difficult Wednesday night. They found three of their goals in the way of point shots either being deflected or finding their way through upwards of five bodies at a time – this was ultimately the deciding factor tonight.

On a positive note, some Express players looked strong playing in place of the aforementioned players’ absences – Christian MacDougall, Sam Marit, and Austin Fraser composed the new-looking top line and all had strong efforts. MacDougall and Marit were terrific on the penalty kill and Marit even potted a goal. Beyond that, MacDougall and Marit showed a lot of emotion and fire tonight that could be harnessed and weaponized moving forward. As for Fraser, well he happened to score his first of the season and add a helper on Marit’s goal to earn the Sharon Perry & Associates Player of the Game Award!

The Express will look to bounce back on the 23rd as they take on the visiting Surrey Eagles.
