Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Powell River Kings (5/3/21)

The Coquitlam Express visited the Powell River Kings Monday night for a late-night clash and they went on to snap their dreadful nine-game losing streak with a monstrous 8-2 victory!

Pregame, we talked about the Express being on the cusp of breaking through a wall and exploding offensively – they did just that, as they scored the most that they had all season. Five players had multi-point outings for the visitors, including Christian MacDougall, who potted his first BCHL hat trick!

This hungry Express team started the game off with a bang and did not turn back. They laid some thunderous hits early in this one and found the game’s first two goals in the first frame. The final shot count of the period was 19-2 in favour of the Express, to paint a picture of the dominance.

Above all else, this team was playing with a level of urgency and desire that we simply just haven’t seen this season, if not for a few short stints here and there. They played a complete 60 minutes, highlighted by strong goaltending, physicality, thorough defence, and a killer offence.

A pivotal part of this game came just around the halfway point of this contest when Alek Sukunda received a double-minor for kneeing. At the time, it was a 3-1 game and the Kings had just found their first of the game. The Express went on to kill it and even add a shorthanded goal to take a 4-1 lead. If the Kings had scored on that man advantage, who knows how this one would have transpired.

Every player on this Express squad played their best game of the season. They all bought in and they should be proud of what they accomplished Monday evening.

The Express’ next game is not until Saturday afternoon.
