Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Salmon Arm Silverbacks (11/06/21)

The Coquitlam Express hosted the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Saturday night at the Train Station.

The first period certainly wasn’t the Express’ best period of the season, as they saw themselves doubled-up in the shots department 16-8. They started the period very slowly, having only one shot until roughly the midway point of the period. The Express were also penalized just a couple of minutes into the hockey game and surrendered a powerplay goal 3:45 into the hockey game. With that being said, the offence was clicking and they responded accordingly as Matthew Campbell and Kahlil Fontana both found goals for the Express in the period to give the Express a brief lead. Unfortunately, the Express took another penalty with 2:52 left in the period and the Silverbacks made quick work of it, scoring just 17 seconds into it. These two clubs would end up at the intermission knotted up at two.

The second period was more evenly matched, seeing the Express outshoot the Silverbacks 15-14 in the frame. But, the Silverbacks did completely control the tail end of the period with an abundance of established zone time. The Silverbacks were given a four-minute look on the powerplay and they made the Express pay once again by scoring in the first half of the extended opportunity. That would be the lone goal of the period and the Express headed into the room down by a goal after 40 minutes of play.

The third period saw a hungry Express team desperate to snap a seven-game losing streak. They outshot the Silverbacks 15-7 in the frame and eventually found the equalizer, courtesy of a very patient Shane Lavelle, who found his second point of the contest. The Express would hang on and take the 3-3 tie into the end of regulation.

Overtime was fairly conservative for both clubs, so a shootout was needed. Of the six Express shooters, Tattle was the only one to find twine and the Silverbacks would eventually close this one out in the sixth round of the shootout.

This was another game that the Express played well for the majority, but a few costly mistakes resulted in an unfortunate fate. The story Saturday night was the Silverbacks’ lethal powerplay – they went 3/4 on the man advantage, chalking up all three of the team’s regulation goals.

The Express are back in action on the 10th, when they host the Langley Rivermen once again at the Train Station.
