Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Surrey Eagles (4/8/21)

The Coquitlam Express took on the Surrey Eagles for the second time this season on Thursday night, hoping to get some revenge after dropping the season opener to the birds last week. They did just that – coming from behind again, the Express knocked off the Eagles 5-2. It was their first of seven games in the next 11 nights, and the front end of a back-to-back situation.

This one had a back-and-forth first period with neither team really giving up too much in the way of quality chances. With that being said, it was the Eagles who struck first, capitalizing off of a bobbled puck. They would cling on to that lead and take it to the room after 20 minutes of play.

Much like in their game against the Powell River Kings back on April 3rd, the Express found their legs in the middle frame and started to open the game up a little bit. Who else but Ryan Tattle got the train rolling with a power play marker just a few minutes into the period – one of his two goals in the game.

The Express would end up heading into the third period knotted at two and that would be the end of the Eagles’ scoring. It was the Alek Sukunda show in the third period as he went on to score a goal and add an assist for his second and third points of the contest. He didn’t stop there – during the Eagles’ late-game push, Sukunda had a monstrous block that likely saved a goal. That really was the Express’ third period in a nutshell – capitalize on offensive chances, and play gritty defence.

The train is rolling! The Express have notched two comeback wins in a row as they head into the tail-end of back-to-back games tomorrow night in a clash with the Powell River Kings.
