The Coquitlam Express have defeated the Victoria Grizzlies 4-3 in BCHL action.
Regular season hockey returned to the Train Station tonight as the Express kicked off their 25th Anniversary Season. And the Express waisted no time in getting the party started. As Justin Ivanusec would open the scoring just 4:31 into the opening frame. Sending the Train Station into an early frenzy. Victoria would answer back a few minutes later, as Owen Warnick would get the first of the season for Victoria. Leaving the two teams tied halfway through the first period. Both netminders would remain solid through the opening frame. With the game tied up a 1 heading into the second period.
Ryan Parker and Carter Capton would continue to hold it down to kick off the middle frame, as the offence and physicality took a huge spike out of the gates in period 2. Victoria would break the deadlock at 14:55 of the 2nd, as Samuel Rosseau would get a power-play marker to put Victoria up 2-1. A lead they would take with them into the 3rd.
The Express had their work cut out for them in the 3rd. Capton would continue to deny every opportunity thrown his way, while Coquitlam had a couple cracks at the power-play themselves, but just couldn’t solve the Victoria netminder. Tayjon Street would then make it 3-1 lead off a breakaway chance. Putting Victoria in the drivers seat, with just over half the period to go. But the Express didn’t look back. Christian Maro would pot his first of the season on the power-play to get Coquitlam back within 1. Then just 3 minutes later Nolan Dupont would tie the game on a tipped shot from the point. With the game looking like it would need extra time the Express would continue to dig deep, and they would be rewarded. As Nolan Flynn get a piece of a puck off a double deflection and sneak it five hole for the Express to take a 4-3 lead with just a little over 2 minutes to go. Coquitlam would hold onto the lead and take their first win of the season by a score of 4-3
The Express return to action on Friday, September 26th as they take on the Chilliwack Chiefs for Country Night at the Train Station!
