Game 1 of the Showcase goes to the Vipers

A constant and well-balanced attack by the Vernon Vipers was the difference in game 1 at the BCHL Showcase for Coquitlam as they drop an 8-1 decision. Many of the old habits Coquitlam had worked to squash over the last few wins came bubbling back to the surface and the tough interior side took advantage.

6 different goal scorers lit the lamp for Vernon with Anthony Cliche doing most of the damage, potting two himself while also assisting on three others on his way to a 5-point night. A commonality for some of the goals against the Express was point shots just sneaking their way through the traffic to find the back of the net. An overall uncharacteristic night for Adam Manji who got hung out to dry on some but still only came away with 19 saves on 27 shots. Special teams also threw a wrench in the plans with Coquitlam giving up 4 powerplays, of which Vernon converted once, but then the Express went 0/3 on their opportunities.

The silver lining in this one goes to a hard worker getting rewarded with Nate Crema scoring his first BCHL goal. A quick wrist shot from the high slot beat Colin Reay upstairs to tie the game up at one at that juncture. Coquitlam was able to keep up with Vernon in the shot department, mustering 28 throughout the contest, they just couldn’t solve Reay more than the single time.

The Express will have a few days to shake off the loss before they get back into the swing of things against Merritt. That game is scheduled for 10:50am PST on Thursday Oct 26th.
