Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Powell River Kings (4/24/21)

The Coquitlam Express hosted the visiting Powell River Kings Saturday afternoon. For the second time this season, the Kings found a way to end the game in overtime. 4-3 the final score.

Straight up, the Express deserved to win this hockey game. They controlled most of the flow of the contest and even came back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to force OT. They played with a shortened bench and let their veteran big-guns do a lot of the dirty work in this matinee meeting. The vets were all noticeable and certainly led by example – Danny Pearson, in particular, had a very hard-working and physical return to the lineup. This Express team was hungry Saturday afternoon and it showed – especially in the first period, as they were all over the Kings

Once again, special teams proved to be the dagger for the Express. The Kings potted two power play markers on four opportunities in the game and it really kept them afloat in this game as the Express were pressing, and pressing hard. On the flip side of that coin, the Express’ power play drought continued Saturday, as they went 0/3 – they are 0/24 in their last six outings.

The Express can’t let this game discourage them as they were clearly the better team in the contest. All they can do is put it in the rearview mirror and keep playing this solid style of hockey. If they can flip the switch on their special teams’ difficulties, they’ll be a handful for the remainder of the season.

They’ll get another shot at getting back in the win column on Monday night as the Surrey Eagles fly into town.
