Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Surrey Eagles (4/23/21)

The Coquitlam Express hosted the visiting Surrey Eagles Friday evening in what was these two teams’ sixth meeting of the season. The Eagles would end up blanking the Express 5-0 in this one, but the score wasn’t necessarily reflective of how the game transpired.

The first period was a messy one for the Express, as they were outshot 20-4 in the frame. With that being said, they held their own in the first five minutes of the period and Ryan Tattle’s line with Keeton Oakley and Austin Fraser looked dangerous. The Eagles would end up finding the period’s only marker.

It was the Express taking the reigns in the second period, outshooting the Eagles 17-10, and controlling the first half of the period. The home team had a plethora of glorious chances but just couldn’t seem to buy a goal. Once again, it was the Eagles finding the scoresheet in the period – this time, it was their first of three power play goals in the game.

To start the third and final period, the game was up in the air with only a two-goal margin, and the Express starting with nearly 30 seconds of power play time. Unfortunately, the Express would find themselves taking four trips to the sin bin in the period and ultimately give up two more power play goals to the hottest man advantage in the BCHL.

The chances were there for the Express, especially in the second period, but they just couldn’t get one past the Eagles’ netminder. Had any of their big chances gone in, there is a much different outcome in this one on Friday night.
