Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Victoria Grizzlies (2/26/22)

The Coquitlam Express hosted the Victoria Grizzlies at the Train Station for their ‘Score for Cancer’ game on Saturday night!

First Period

The Express were the better hockey team in the opening frame as they came out absolutely flying and set a pace that they were able to keep throughout the 20 minutes.

It was the Express who opened the scoring as Mateo Dixon redirected a point shot home just 5:03 into the hockey game.

Following that, the Express deployed a very strong 1-2-2 trap through the neutral zone that, for the most part, shut down the Grizzlies’ very talented group.

However, the Grizzlies did slip through at one point and capitalized on perhaps their only quality scoring chance of the period.

After 20, the score was knotted at one with the Express doubling up on the Grizzlies in the shot department 16-8.

Second Period

The Grizzlies had a much better period as they were able to penetrate the Express’ trap with much more frequency.

It was a scoreless period until the Grizzlies took their first lead of the night with 5:51 remaining. They ended up doubling their lead 4.5 minutes later as they took advantage of some broken down coverage.

Matthew Wood and Ellis Rickwood combined for two goals and two helpers through 40 minutes.

The Express played a solid period overall, but they allowed Wood and Rickwood way too much time and space as they generated the majority of their clubs’ scoring chances in the frame.

After 40, the Grizzlies took a 3-1 lead into the room despite being outshot 25-15 by the Express

Third Period

This one had a storybook ending as the Express clawed all the way back, but only two words are needed to summarize this one – Ryan Tattle.

Tattle put the Express on his back as he potted four goals and a helper in the final frame – yes, you read that right!

After each Tattle goal, the Train Station got louder and louder, and the Grizzlies grew more and more deflated.

Thanks to Tattle’s incredible period, the Express skated to a massive 6-3 win over the visiting Grizzlies!

The Express are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs!
