Express Down Eagles 7-3

On Wednesday, the Coquitlam Express defeated the Surrey Eagles 7-3.

The Eagles got into some early penalty trouble starting with a tripping call on Anthony Conti.  Seconds into the powerplay, Corey Mackin of the Express capitalized on this opportunity with his second goal with the man advantage this season.

The Express went back on the Powerplay when Surrey's Chase McMurphy was assessed two minutes and a misconduct for a hit to the head.  Canon Pieper scored and continued Coquitlam's early success with the extra man to make it 2-0.

Surrey would not back down and with goals by Danton Heinen and Nathan Renouf, tied the game up before the first intermission.

The second period started with another Eagles penalty but the Express were not able to put the puck in the net this time.  The second period also saw Jace Hennig score a goal and drop the gloves against Matthew Dawson.  On the scoresheet it was all Coquitlam this period with Canon Pieper and Corey Mackin each scoring their second goals of the game.

After two goals by captain Ryan Rosenthal, the Express hunkered down and played a solid defensive game despite taking a series of penalties.  Coquitlam was outshot 15-9 in the final frame and goaltender Gordie Defiel was solid in preserving the win.

The three stars of the game were:
1.  Canon Pieper, Coquitlam (2 G)
2.  Adam Rockwood, Coquitlam (4 A)
3.  Corey Mackin, Coquitlam (2 G)

The Express will play their next game Friday night as they host the Chilliwack Chiefs (10-29-1-3) at the Poirier Sports & Leisure Complex.  Tickets are still available at the door.
