Express Hammer Smokies

It was another entertaining Sunday Family Funday at the Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex on January 19th. The Express were able to score early and often on route to a 7-2 victory over the Trail Smoke Eaters.

The visiting Smoke Eaters were able to open the game’s scoring at 2:13 on Jeremy McNeil’s 1st career BCHL goal. Corey Mackin responded less than 90 seconds later with his 21st of the season. Canon Pieper put the Express ahead 2-1 with his 6th goal in the last 4 games. Coquitlam finished the period ahead 15 to 11 in shots.

After some back and forth to start the 2nd Period, Zach Hodder was able to extend the Express lead to 3-1. Marc Biega tallied his 14th of the season at the 14:45 of the frame. The goal put Biega in the league lead for goals scored by a defensemen, 1 ahead of Chilliwack’s Carter Cochrane. Daniell Lange would round out the period’s scoring, making it 5-1 for the home side.

Both teams exchanged powerplay markers to open the 3rd Period. Mackin notched his 2nd of the game and 22nd of the season on the man advantage at 10:47. Coquitlam native, Joey Santucci, rounded out the scoring at 15:28 of the 3rd. Gordie Defiel’s 28 saves earned him his 16th win of the season.
