Express Streak Stopped at Six

Less than 24 hours after defeating Merritt, the Express were back in action 8 hours north in Prince George.

The matchup is more than likely to be a 1st round matchup in the Fred Page Cup Playoffs. With only 4 points separating the teams heading into Saturday, all that is left to settle in the final month of the season is who will end up in 2nd place with home ice advantage.

Each side took turns lighting the lamp in the 1st Period. Joey Santucci opened the game’s scoring at 4:51 with assists going to linemates Adam Rockwood and Corey Mackin. Prince George answered with two goals of their own before Bo Pieper tied the game at 2-2.

Coquitlam’s Pierce Dushenko and Prince George’s Alex Murray stood tall during the 2nd Period, hold both offenses at bay.

Spruce Kings’ Captain, Bryant Christian capitalized on an early 3rd Period powerplay, giving the home side their 2nd lead of the game. With the 3-2 lead, the Spruce Kings tightened up their defensive play. It seemed as if they would be able to hold of the Express until Mark Whiteley and Jackson Cressey set up Adam Rockwood with 1:14 remaining in regulation. Two overtime periods solved nothing and each team took their single point.

Prince George was able to net 3 goals in the 2nd Period to open up a 3-0 lead. They added 2 insurance markers in the 3rd Period, pushing the lead to 5-0. Express defenceman, Cameron Marks, was able to spoil Alex Murray’s shutout bid with 16 seconds to go in the game. It was Marks’ 4th goal of the season and 23rd point.
