The Coquitlam Express are set to host the visiting Powell River Kings in their second home game of the young 2021-22 season! Tonight, the Express will be sporting their pink jerseys as part of their ‘Pink in the Rink’ night – a night dedicated to breast cancer awareness. Puck drop is at 7:00pm.

The Express are coming off of a 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of the Nanaimo Clippers. A game in which they played debatably their best game of hockey so far this season – they outshot the clippers 38-20 and controlled the majority of the game’s flow. A major contributing factor to this loss was their shortcomings on the powerplay, as they would go 0/5 on the man advantage. Over the past two contests, the Express are 0/10 on the powerplay. A bounce-back evening needs to be on the menu for this Express team’s powerplay groups.
Tonight could certainly be the night for that aforementioned bounce-back – the Powell River Kings are the owners of the BCHL’s second-worst penalty kill (65.4%). Additionally, the Express should look to exploit the Kings’ lack of discipline on the season, as they have been shorthanded 26 times, good enough for the fourth-highest in the league.
One gets the sense that this Express team is on the cusp of really gelling as a unit. Chemistry is starting to be generated throughout the lineup and systems are starting to be strongly executed. Beyond that, this team fights for each other – the little things like sticking up for their teammates show the compete level that is so vital to win at this level. This group is poised for a big confidence-boosting game in which everything just clicks. We’ve seen flashes of this, but have yet to see the whole package.
The Express need to execute on the powerplay this evening. If they can do that and pair it with the strong 5-on-5 play that they’ve recently been showcasing, they’ll be in a very good position to win tonight’s game and beyond.
Adam Manji gets the nod for the hometown Express tonight. He is currently winless on the season, but not for a lack of solid and busy play.
