Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Powell River Kings (10/27/21)

The Coquitlam Express hosted the visiting Powell River Kings on Wednesday night as part of their ‘Pink in the Rink’ night!

The first period was very wide open with 35 total shots taken in the frame and multiple odd man rushes for both clubs. Notably, the Express chalked up 24 shots in the period – the most of any BCHL team in a single period this season. Lucas Lundy opened the scoring early for the Express, but the story was newcomer Shane Lavelle, who scored his first goal as an Express in his first period as one! The Kings would add a pair of their own in the opening frame and that’s where the score would stay heading into the second period.

The middle frame saw the Express get into some penalty trouble as they took three penalties, including a four-minute call for kneeing, and they ultimately surrendered two powerplay goals in the period. The period’s momentum was certainly in favour of the Kings, and the powerplay time undoubtedly helped out with that. The Kings would go on to score two additional goals in the frame to take a 6-2 lead into the third period. The Kings outshot the Express 14-12 in the frame.

The third period looked like the second for the Express as they’d take another four penalties and surrender an additional three powerplay goals. The Express did start the period with some life, though, as Kahlil Fontana buried one just 39 seconds in to cut the lead down to three.

The Express started out fantastic, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead and chalking up 24 shots in the opening period, but it was all Kings after that. The Kings would then outscore the Express 9-1 in the remainder of the hockey game – the Express just couldn’t stop the bleeding. It’s not every night that you see a team lose 9-3 even while putting up 43 shots. The ultimate dagger was the penalties – the Kings scored a whopping five powerplay goals on the night.

The Express are back in action on Friday as they visit the Surrey Eagles.
