HISTORIC SMOKIES IN TOWN FOR TEDDY BEAR TOSS

Saturday night  marks the one and only regular season visit from the historic Trail Smoke Eaters. The Smokies were founded in 1926, and are a cornerstone in BC's hockey history. From 1931-1960, the Smoke Eaters won 22 Mowat Cup Championships, crowning them the best Jr. hockey team in BC for the better part of 3 decades. In 1944, they brought brought home the Allan Cup as national Jr. hockey champions. The franchise is undoubtedy a foundational pillar in Jr. hockey west of the prairies.

It's been a tough go around this season for the Smokies, who sit in 3rd last in the BCHL and last place in the Interior Division. Defensive play has been the biggest barrier for the team, as they have given up 48 more goals than they've scored on the season. Brent Baltus offers a bright spot in the lineup as he currently sits 4 in BCHL scoring with 33 points. The team has gone 1-4-0-0 in their last 5 games, including a close 4-3 loss to the Powell River Kings last night.

The Express head into tonight's matchup 2-3-0-0 over their last 5 games. With 2 points last night in Surrey, John Seimer moved into a second place tie for league scoring with 34 points. Philip Zeilonka potted another goal last night, making it 12 straight games with a point. Rookie goalie Daniel Urbani recorded his first career BCHL shutout when the Express took a 4-0 decision in an October matchup in Trail.

Tonight is another important night at the Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex as it is the annual Teddy Bear Toss. Bring a new or gently used teddy bear to tonight's game, and when the Express score their first goal, throw the bears on the ice! All of the bears will be collected and taken to SHARE Society headquarters, where they will be distributed to children in need in our community. Bears can also be purchased at the game for $10, with proceeds and the bears going back to SHARE. Puck drop is 7pm. GO EXPRESS GO!
