Postgame Thoughts – Coquitlam Express vs Powell River Kings (5/8/21)

The Coquitlam Express hosted the Powell River Kings Saturday afternoon in what was these two teams’ final meeting of the season. The Express continued their strong play as of late and convincingly defeated the Kings 7-2 – they have outscored the Kings 15-3 over the past two meetings.

The Express played a fairly tentative first frame but really started to open the game up and sway momentum in the second period. They took a 3-1 lead into the final period and didn’t take their feet off of the gas pedal, adding another four markers.

Pregame, we spoke about younger players starting to step up as the season winds down and they did just that. Both Matthew Campbell and Lucas Lundy found their first BCHL goals Saturday afternoon.

On the topic of Campbell, the young man also went on to drop the gloves, so he will unfortunately not be available in the Express’ Sunday game against the Surrey Eagles. This is a major loss, considering how well Campbell has been playing as of late – the young man has been steadily gaining confidence as this season has rolled along. He’s a smooth-skating d-man with offensive upside and a mean streak – he’s going to be a terrific BCHL player as his career progresses.

Sam Marit and Tyler Schleppe carried the offensive load for the Express Saturday afternoon, combining for three goals and three helpers in the contest. Marit, the 20-year-old, had himself his best game of the season with one goal and two assists to his name. Schleppe continued his offensive prowess and, in his last two games, has chalked up a staggering seven points.

The Express will close out the season Sunday afternoon with a game against the Surrey Eagles, who have won 12 straight games. 20-year-old Jaden Little is expected to get the nod in what will be his final game. With a win on Sunday, the Express will take second place in the Coquitlam Pod, snap the Eagles’ win streak, and finish the season on a three-game heater.

Puck drop is at 1:00pm for that one!
