Game Day! Coquitlam Express vs Powell River Kings (5/8/21)

It’s game day!

The Coquitlam Express are set to take on the Powell River Kings in what will be their final meeting of this shortened pod season. Puck drop is at 1:00pm.

In their last meeting, the Express claimed a massive 8-2 victory and snapped their nine-game losing streak. They played their best game of the season and finally got rewarded for the strong play they’ve displayed in their last few outings. They started the game extremely strong, outshooting the Kings 19-2 in the first frame and taking a 2-0 lead to the dressing room. They didn’t look back, playing sound defence and capitalizing on their chances as they progressed through the game.

The Express’ penalty kill continued their prowess, going 100% once again against the Kings – they’ve killed 12/13 in their last three games and it’s done wonders in terms of not letting these games slip away from them, as they got accustomed to in the middle portion of this season.

Despite there being no playoffs this season, the Express have the chance to accomplish something. If they can find wins in their final two games, they’ll leapfrog the Kings and take second place in the Coquitlam Pod. Ultimately, this team is already building towards next season, and completing this challenge could prove to be a huge building block for this group moving forward – they’ll have a lot of youth returning with something to prove next season.

If anything, this group needs to play for themselves and their 20-year-olds. They have five 20’s moving on from the BCHL at the end of this weekend, and they deserve some reward for showing up and leaving it all out there game in and game out – Danny Pearson, Will Dow-Kenny, Jaden Little, Colten Kovich, Sam Marit. These remaining games will serve as the figurative passing of the torch. The younger and inexperienced players need to step up and start taking the helm of this Express team.

This team can finish the season on a three-game heater and prove to this pod that their record is not an accurate representation of their play. Let’s go!

Get off the tracks – a train is coming through!
