Game Day! Coquitlam Express @ Surrey Eagles (9/20/21)

The Coquitlam Express are officially back as they kick off their exhibition schedule with an afternoon tilt against the Surrey Eagles. Puck drop is at 2:00PM in South Surrey.

The boys in black and gold held their main camp over the weekend and GM Tali Campbell says that he liked what he saw out there,

The tempo at camp has been great. There is going to be some tough decisions to make in the coming days to narrow down. I have been impressed.”

From the players, all the way up to ownership, this is a very different-looking hockey club than we saw pre-COVID. There has been a complete culture shift within the Express organization and this afternoon’s game will be the first true test for this group.

Since the first day of camp, one thing has been clear: no spots are given and all spots are earned. The new head coach, Brandon Shaw, is looking forward to seeing how this translates to a real game situation,

“Camp has been competitive so far. We have had many players make improvements over the three days. I’m excited to watch some of these young players get in their first junior exhibition game and see how they handle the pace and level of play. I expect to see our guys continue to focus on the details and their effort each shift.”

This is the first of six tightly-packed exhibition games that the Express have scheduled as they roll into October. The remainder of the schedule looks like this:

  • Sept. 21 @ Langley – 7:15PM
  • Sept. 22 vs Merritt – 7:00PM
  • Sept. 24 vs Surrey – 7:00PM
  • Sept. 29 vs Langley – 7:00PM
  • Oct. 1 @ Chilliwack – 6:00PM
