Express Fall Short On Weekend Road Swing

Jan. 13 – The weekend brought another test for your Coquitlam Express, with back-to-back road games against two of the top teams in the Interior Division.
The road swing kicked off on Friday night in West Kelowna against the red hot Warriors. West Kelowna were winners in 8 of their past 10 games heading into puck drop against the Express. They carried that momentum into the 1st Period and were able to jump out to an early 4-0 lead on the road weary visitors.
Defenceman, Marc Biega, would get the Express on the board with less than 1 minute to go in the opening period. It was his 8th goal in 7 games and 13th on the season.
The Express were able to cut the lead in half at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd Period, when Canon Pieper scored his 22nd goal of his rookie campaign.
That would be all the offense the Express could muster as the Warriors would go on to win the game 7-2.
Saturday night provided the opportunity for redemption with a matchup in the packed Kal Tire Place in Vernon. Pierce Dushenko drew in for his 10th start of the season between the pipes for the Express.
Both sides played the 1st Period with relative caution. Neither team surmounted a substantial attack, but the Express were able to end up with a 8-3 shot advantage.
Jace Hennig would open the game’s scoring on the powerplay, 4:07 into the 2nd frame. Colton Sparrow tallied the equalizer with less than two minutes to go, sending the teams into the final 20 vying for the win.
Newly acquired Viper, Brett Mulcahy, scored twice in the 3rd Period to seal the win for Vernon.

BC Minor Hockey Week is a busy one for the Express that kicks of with a Wednesday night home game with the Surrey Eagles. Friday and Saturday marks a home and home with the Chilliwack Chiefs before the Trail Smoke Eaters visit on Sunday afternoon.
